Day 55 - Beautiful Rituals

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Gerard asked us today if we thought going to the Sri Temple was worth it. I say, absolutely! It was up there with my favourite experiences from the trip. We’re here to experience other cultures and I think this is a great way to do it. The ceremony was wonderful and I know some where upset about the segregation, I really wasn’t. I was respecting their culture as I experienced it. It really didn’t feel like I was being treated as a ‘second-class citizen’ as one of my peers phrased it. This is just my opinion however. I think the temple is a great learning experience and well worth it.

In fact, I found Kensal Green more offensive than the Sri Temple. Well more creepy than offensive, I guess. I wasn’t a big fan of the huge mausoleums. People seem to be too obsessed with material possessions that they have to have the biggest crypt. One outdoing another. Maybe that’s just the way I’m seeing them today. They are great sculptural pieces, don’t get me wrong. I just still stand by my choice of wanting to be cremated. No mausoleum for me.
